According to the Nielsen Homescan website, the Nielsen Homescan consumer panel is a “mini USA”, which represents millions of American citizens. They are looking for people from across America to participate in their interesting online consumer market research projects, and they are willing to offer incentives to all those willing to do so. As a participant in this process, you will simply be required to scan the barcodes of your various purchases, after which you will also be invited to complete short and entertaining surveys. As a panellist, you will therefore have the chance to make your opinions count in the consumer marketplace, while at the same time make a difference to some of the world’s biggest brands.

In order to participate in the process, you will have to become a member of the Home Scan Consumer Panel, which you can do directly on their website. Once you have completed the online registration form and submitted your detailed household information, you will be placed on a waiting list, and panellists will be randomly selected to participate in the various studies. According to their website, this ensures that the panel truly reflects the country’s diverse population.

I was a little skeptical at first. I got my scanner threw the mail hooked it up to my computer, read the book, started scanning my purchases. I was skeptical about what they were offering so, I halfheartedly agreed to join. They sent me a welcome packet in the mail along with the barcode scanner electronic equipment needed to transmit weekly barcode information. At first I was not so comfortable with the whole thing, but after getting the routine down and earning gift points, the Neilsen Homescan membership became almost fun and something worthwhile to do.Now I hope to keep participating for a long time and maybe even win one of their numerous sweepstakes.
